Could the Gospel actually be concealed in the genealogy of Noah in Genesis 5? You have to understand that the names we use in English were transliterated from the Hebrew (i.e. they were made to sound like the Hebrew names). But the Hebrew names mean something (e.g. the Hebrew name that we call Adam means “Man” in Hebrew.) Let’s look at what the Hebrew names translated into English actually mean in Hebrew.
Noah's Genealogy Taken From Genesis 5
English Name | Hebrew Meaning |
---|---|
Adam | Man (is) |
Seth | Appointed |
Enosh | Mortal |
Kenan | Sorrow; (but) |
Mahalalel | The Blessed God |
Jared | Shall come down |
Enoch | Teaching |
Methuselah | His death shall bring |
Lamech | The Despairing |
Noah | Comfort, Rest |
So what we see is: Man (is) appointed mortal sorrow; (but) The Blessed God shall come down teaching His death shall bring the despairing comfort or rest.
Was God telegraphing His plan for salvation in this genealogy?
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but it is the honor of kings to search out a matter. -Proverbs 25:2
